Overcoming Time & Installation Challenges in California

RCR-7® | Irrigation Canal Solution

Earthen Canal Before RCR® Application

Irrigation Canal After RCR® Application

Project Objectives Using Reinforced Concrete Roll®

PROJECT OVERVIEW

Existing water canals were requiring repair or replacement. Portions of the water supply line in a farming community were converted from their current open-channel trapezoidal canal to a new underground water supply pipe. Another portion used RCR® to line the open-channel trapezoidal canal.

PROJECT GOAL

Provide a durable and quick-to-install solution that would take the canal out of service for five days or less. Tie into existing structures and features seamlessly.

RCR® WAS THE SOLUTION BECAUSE:

  • The Irrigation District was unable to continue with running/installing the new style underground pipe due to property rights.
  • A "dog-leg" canal had to be excavated in order to direct water flow from the new water pipe back to the old open-style canal.
  • The canal is intended to be temporary but it may take many years to acquire the property.

Applying RCR-7® To Overcome Time & Installation Challenges for Irrigation Canal

This canal serves a farming community prone to excessive temperatures near the Mexico border. As this canal is vital to the community, it could not be out of service for more than five days in total. Completing the RCR® application took three days, and hydration in the overly dry climate conditions took a fourth day.

As illustrated, some difficult angles had to be overcome in the transition from the RCR® material to the existing concrete vault. The installation of the material differed from a typical application in that it was applied from the upstream side, resulting in extra attention to seam security.

ITL Reinforced Concrete Roll® was ultimately chosen over alternative materials for several reasons: given the shorter section with two curves, traditional concrete would have been more costly and time-intensive, which would have delayed the canal's return to use. Comparatively, other geomembrane options would have been susceptible to vandalism and animal damage.
