Significant Labor Cost Savings
RCR-7® | Ditch Resurfacing
Project Objectives Using Reinforced Concrete Roll®
PROJECT OVERVIEW
Harbor Dredge and Dock used ITL RCR® to resurface a deteriorating 280-foot concrete ditch in Richmond, Virginia. The project demonstrated the product’s flexibility, speed of installation, and ease of use.
PROJECT GOAL
- Resurface an aging canal ditch with a solution to enhance lifespan.
- Reduce installation time and labor requirements.
- Provide a cost-effective alternative to shotcrete.
KEY TAKEAWAYS
- Resurface an aging canal ditch with a solution to enhance lifespan.
- Reduce installation time and labor requirements.
- Provide a cost-effective alternative to shotcrete.
- Cost Savings! Reducing the time of install, drastically reduced labor costs.
Faster Installation-Long Term Solution
ITL RCR-7® MAKES RESURFACING MORE ECONOMICAL
Efficient Installation
Six rolls of RCR-7 were delivered to the site and cut into 20-foot sections to line the 18-foot-wide ditch. RCR was anchored in place using anchor trenches along both sides and the crew fastened the initial panels at the culvert entrance using batten bars. With the product’s large panel size and ease of on-site assembly, installation proceeded quickly. Seams were overlapped by six inches, shingled in the direction of water flow, and thermally fused using a propane torch to form a continuous lining. Despite having no prior experience with RCR the six-person crew, equipped with only mini excavators, installed the RCR in a single day, covering nearly 6,000 square feet of surface area.
Durability in Design
The flexibility of ITL RCR allowed it to conform seamlessly to the existing concrete geometry while still providing the necessary structural reinforcement for long-term performance. Unlike shotcrete, which would have required more equipment, longer curing times, and specialized labor, RCR provided a rapid and cost-efficient resurfacing solution. Once hydrated and secured, the material formed a reinforced layer designed to withstand environmental pressures without separating or degrading. The ease of handling, combined with a significant reduction in time and labor, ensured the project was completed on schedule and with confidence in its long-term viability.
