Concrete Remediation
and Repair

A Strong, Versatile GCCM for
Stabilizing Concrete

Concrete remediation is a means of restoring the integrity or functionality of concrete, while concrete repair involves smaller corrective measures. Inland Tarp’s Reinforced Concrete Roll® (RCR®) is a cement composite that unrolls for a flexible, pliable solution that can be applied for both concrete remediation and repair.

Deploying RCR®, a geosynthetic cementitious composite mat (GCCM) product, is a more cost-effective and efficient approach to stabilizing existing concrete than applying traditional concrete-pour methods.

Concrete Remediation
and Repair Applications

The application of RCR® includes concrete remediation and repair for:

  • Canal and ditch liners
  • Surfaces protecting slopes
  • Culverts and culvert lining
  • Lining for secondary containment
    (including splash pads and berms)
  • Lining of lagoons and ponds
  • Spillways and outfalls

A Versatile Solution

RCR® is a versatile solution that can be fitted to curves, placed around corners, and attached to pipe penetrations and overflow swales.

Ditch Resurfacing Case Study

Resurfacing a Deteriorating Concrete Ditch in Virginia

Overview

An aging concrete ditch was resurfaced with RCR®-7, resulting in a shorter, less expensive installation process compared to shotcrete installation.

Project Goal

Resurface an aging 280-foot concrete canal ditch with a solution to extend lifespan.

Why RCR® for the Job

RCR-7® was selected over the alternative options of traditional concrete, pipe replacement, and composite lining for being less disruptive and time-consuming.

Aspects of the Installation

16-ft.-4-in.-wide RCR-7® rolls were delivered to the site and cut into 20-ft.-long sections to line the 18-ft.-wide ditch.

RCR-7® was anchored in place using anchor trenches along both sides of the ditch, and the crew fastened the initial panels at the culvert entrance using batten bars. Seams were overlapped by 6 inches, shingled in the direction of water flow, and thermally fused using a propane torch to form a continuous lining.

The flexibility of RCR allowed it to conform seamlessly to the existing concrete geometry while still providing the necessary structural reinforcement for long-term performance.

Completion

This project was completed on schedule. With the product’s large panel size and ease of on-site assembly, installation proceeded quickly. Despite having no prior experience with RCR, the six-person crew, equipped with only mini-excavators, installed the entire 280-foot concrete canal ditch in a single day.

The installation was simpler and faster than a shotcrete installation, which would have required more equipment, longer curing times, and specialized labor.

Concrete Remediation and Repair Q&A

RCR® will attach to existing concrete, plastic liners, and bituminous liners. Contact us for information on installation.

There are two options: RCR-7® (7mm thickness) and RCR-12® (12mm thickness). RCR-7® is for applications such as erosion and vegetation control. RCR-12® uses include canal lining and slope protection.

Yes. Existing concrete, even with larger cracks, may remain in place, though large voids and any sharp edges will need to be treated prior to installation.

Pieces of RCR® can be connected by overlapping approximately 150mm (6 inches) of the product and then hot torching the overlapping pieces together.

RCR® pieces can also be butted side by side with no overlap if small gaps are acceptable for an application.

The standard size of an RCR® roll is 5m wide x 20m long (approximately 16 ft., 4 in. x 65 ft., 7 in.). With additional lead time, custom sizes are available. Standard-sized RCR-7® rolls are 1,700 lbs., and standard-sized RCR-12® rolls are 2,800 lbs.
