Culvert Pipe Repair Case Study
RCR-7® for a Culvert Pipe Project in Ohio
Overview
RCR-7® was installed to repair a 60-inch culvert pipe running 24 feet long, made of 8-gauge corrugated galvanized steel.
Project Goal
Repair a 30-year-old culvert pipe thinned by water and sediment flow while also minimizing disruption to traffic from an adjacent highway.
Why RCR® for the Job
Given a shorter section with two curves, using traditional concrete would have been more costly and time-intensive than deploying RCR®, which would have delayed the canal's return to use. Also, compared to RCR®, other geomembrane options would have been more susceptible to vandalism and animal damage.
Aspects of the Installation
One roll of RCR-7®, which is a 7mm composite concrete product, was pre-cut to 4-foot x 6-foot sheets and Hilti-fastened every 6 inches along the inside top edges and the end of the pipe. Sheets down the length of the pipe were overlapped by 6 inches and welded together with a handheld propane torch.
The installation was benefitted by the ability of RCR® to mold well to the pipe corrugations during the hydration process.
Tar sealed the top edges before the RCR-7® product was hydrated.
Completion
The pipe was returned to service immediately after installation.

Can RCR® be installed in wet conditions?
Yes. RCR® can be installed in wet conditions, including underwater.
Can ITL RCR® be cut and fitted around penetrations?
Yes. RCR® can be sealed around virtually all penetrations.
How are multiple pieces of RCR® connected?
Pieces of RCR® can be connected by overlapping approximately 150mm (6 inches) of the product and then hot torching the overlapping pieces together.
RCR® pieces can also be butted side by side with no overlap if small gaps are acceptable for an application.
The standard size of an RCR® roll is 5m wide x 20m long (approximately 16 ft., 4 in. x 65 ft., 7 in.). With additional lead time, custom sizes are available. Standard-sized RCR-7® rolls are 1,700 lbs., and standard-sized RCR-12® rolls are 2,800 lbs.
